Lessons
See yourself as a bagpiper?
You don't have to be an experienced musician or have Scottish or Irish heritage to learn the great Highland bagpipes. If you've ever imagined yourself playing the bagpipes or just want to try something new, take your first steps by providing your contact information below.
Are bagpipes required to start lessons?
No. Before picking up a full set of bagpipes, new students will spend anywhere from a few months to a year playing an instrument called a practice chanter. Similar to a recorder, the practice chanter is smaller and quieter than the pipes, making it ideal for learning finger placement and building solid technique. Even an experienced piper will play the practice chanter often.
So, if you already have a set of bagpipes, that's great! If not, there's no rush to get a set right away while you're first starting out. As for a practice chanter, I can point you in the right direction if you haven't purchased one yet.
How do lessons work?
I teach students who are brand new to the pipes as well as those who already have some experience under their belt. Although face-to-face lessons are ideal, I also offer lessons via Zoom or Facetime to those who prefer it because of distance or other reasons. A hybrid of both in-person and video-call lessons is also an option. I'm happy to provide more details and hear what your preferences are once we're in contact.
